Autumn Pet Safety Tips from Wings and Paws Animal Rescue

As the leaves change and the air turns crisp, autumn brings many wonderful things for both us and our pets. Cosy evenings, long walks in cool weather, and fun outdoor adventures await. However, this season also brings certain dangers that pet owners should be aware of. At Wings and Paws Animal Rescue, we want to ensure your furry, feathered and scaly friends stay safe and happy all season long. Here are some essential autumn pet safety tips to keep in mind.

1. Watch Out for Toxic Plants

Autumn means falling leaves, but also the arrival of other plant hazards. Some plants and mushrooms that thrive in cooler, damp conditions can be toxic to pets if ingested. For example, certain types of mushrooms, like the Amanita species, can be deadly to dogs and cats. Be cautious when walking your pets in wooded or grassy areas where these plants might grow.

Tip: Make sure your pet doesn’t eat anything you can’t identify, and if you suspect they've ingested a toxic plant, contact your vet immediately.

2. Halloween Hazards

Halloween is a fun holiday for many, but it can be a tricky time for pets. Chocolate, sweets, and sweet wrappers are toxic to dogs and cats. Sugar-free sweets that contain xylitol can be deadly. Keep your Halloween treats well out of your pets' reach, and dispose of any wrappers securely in the bin.

Additionally, costumes can be uncomfortable or even dangerous if not chosen carefully. Avoid costumes with small parts that can be chewed off or tight-fitting outfits that could restrict movement or breathing.

Tip: If you do dress your pet up, ensure the costume is comfortable, breathable, and doesn’t have any choking hazards.

3. Be Aware of Antifreeze

As temperatures drop, many people start winterising their cars, which often involves using antifreeze. Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, a sweet-tasting but highly toxic chemical. Even small amounts can be fatal for pets. Unfortunately, pets are attracted to its taste, so any spills or leaks can pose a significant danger.

Tip: Keep antifreeze containers tightly sealed and clean up any spills immediately. There are also pet-safe alternatives available that are worth considering.

4. Cooler Weather Precautions

As autumn sets in, temperatures can drop significantly, especially in the mornings and evenings. While some pets enjoy cooler weather, others may need extra protection, particularly short-haired dogs or senior pets. Ensure your pets stay warm during outdoor activities, and if it's chilly, consider a pet jacket for those walks.

Tip: Don’t leave pets outside for extended periods when it’s cold, and make sure they have a warm, cosy space indoors to rest.

5. Fallen Leaves and Hidden Dangers

Piles of leaves may seem like fun for pets to romp through, but they can also hide dangerous objects like sharp sticks, harmful plants, or even small animals. Wet, decomposing leaves can harbour mould, which is harmful if ingested or inhaled by your pets.

Tip: Keep your garden clear of large piles of leaves and supervise your pets when playing outside to avoid hidden hazards.

6. Joint Health Awareness

With cooler weather, older pets or those prone to arthritis may experience more joint pain or stiffness. Keep an eye on how your pets are moving, and ensure they get plenty of gentle exercise to stay mobile without overdoing it.

Tip: If you notice increased stiffness or discomfort, consult your vet about supplements or medications that can help ease your pet's joint pain.

7. Shorter Days and Increased Wildlife

As daylight fades earlier, your evening walks may take place in low-light conditions. This can increase the risk of pets getting lost or encountering wildlife such as deer, foxes, or badgers. Be cautious during dusk and dawn when animals are most active.

Tip: Use reflective gear or LED collars on your pets during walks, and always keep them on a leash to prevent accidents or encounters with wild animals.

8. Rodenticides and Other Poisons

With colder weather, rodents start seeking shelter indoors, which can lead homeowners to use rodenticides. These poisons are extremely dangerous to pets if ingested, even in small amounts. Always be mindful of where you're placing traps or poisons, and opt for pet-friendly solutions if you can.

Tip: If you suspect your pet has been exposed to rodenticides, contact your vet or an emergency vets immediately.

Conclusion- Autumn Pet Safety is vital

Autumn is a beautiful and refreshing time of year, but it’s important to keep our pets safe from the hidden dangers the season brings. By staying informed and taking a few simple precautions, you can ensure your furry companions enjoy a safe and happy fall alongside you.
