So, you’ve decided to adopt a rescue dog? First of all - amazing choice! 🎉 Giving a dog a second chance at a loving home is one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do. But, before you start dreaming of cosy cuddles on the sofa and picture-perfect walks in the park, let’s talk about something really important: the 3-3-3 Rule.

This simple guide helps you understand what your new furry friend is going through in their first 3 days, 3 weeks, and 3 months in your home. Think of it as their adjustment roadmap - it’ll help you stay patient, realistic, and ready to support them every step of the way.

The First 3 Days: The ‘What Have I Gotten Myself Into?’ Stage

Your new pup has just left the rescue. They don’t know they’ve won the jackpot yet! Right now, they’re likely to be feeling:

🐶 Overwhelmed - A whole new world of smells, sounds, and sights? It’s a lot to take in!

🐶 Shy or Nervous - Some dogs will hide, some might pace, and some might just freeze like a little statue.

🐶 Not That Hungry - Don’t panic if they sniff at their food and walk away - stress can make even the hungriest pups lose their appetite.

🐶 Sleepy or Restless - Some will sleep loads, others might struggle to settle at night.

📌 What You Can Do:

  • Give them space - let them come to you when they’re ready.

  • Keep things calm and predictable. Avoid loud visitors or overwhelming them with too much excitement.

  • Stick to a routine - walks, meals and bedtime should happen at the same time each day.

Patience is key here. Don’t expect tail wags and kisses straight away - trust takes time.

The First 3 Weeks: The ‘Getting Comfortable’ Stage

This is when your dog starts thinking, okay… maybe this place isn’t so bad after all. You’ll notice:

🐾 A Bit More Confidence - They’ll start exploring, sniffing EVERYTHING, and maybe even wagging their tail!

🐾 Personality Starts to Show - That quiet, shy pup? Surprise! They might actually be a total goofball.

🐾 Some Boundaries Being Tested - Just like a toddler, they’re working out what’s allowed (and what they can get away with).

📌 What You Can Do:

  • Start basic training - use positive reinforcement (aka treats and praise!) to reward good behaviour.

  • Stick to your rules - if they’re not allowed on the sofa, don’t let them up "just this once" (they’ll remember, trust me).

  • Introduce them to new experiences gradually - don’t rush them into social situations before they’re ready.

The First 3 Months: The ‘I’m Home!’ Stage

By now, your rescue dog should be feeling properly settled. They’ve figured out the routine, their personality is shining, and - if you’ve put in the work - you should have a strong bond forming. Expect:

💛 Trust & Affection - They’ll look to you for comfort and might start showing more affection (cue the tail wags and kisses!).

💛 Better Behaviour - Consistent training will pay off as they learn commands and manners.

💛 Feeling at Home - They’ll be more relaxed, confident, and comfortable in their forever home.

📌 What You Can Do:

  • Keep up with training - dogs love learning, so keep reinforcing good behaviour.

  • Give them enrichment - puzzle toys, sniffy walks, or learning new tricks keep their brains happy!

  • If they’re still struggling with any behaviours, reach out for help - a trainer or behaviourist can work wonders. Here at Wings and Paws Rescue we're always happy to offer advice if we can, afterall they lived with us first while in foster.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind when Adopting a Rescue dog…

🐕 Every dog is different - some take longer to settle, and that’s okay!

🐕 If they’ve had a rough past, they might need extra patience and understanding.

🐕 Rescue dogs aren’t "broken" - they just need time to learn that they’re finally safe.

The Bottom Line? Be Patient, Be Kind, and Stick With It!

Adopting a rescue is amazing, but it’s not always easy. The 3-3-3 Rule is here to remind you that adjusting takes time. Give your dog the space, support, and love they need, and they’ll reward you with a bond like no other.
